6 Ways You're Ruining Your Brushes Without Knowing It

I've wrecked a lot of brushes in my life. I learned the hard way what destroys brushes so hopefully this video can help you to keep your brushes in good condition.
Brushes will eventually wear out no matter what you do but you can definitely extend the life of your brushes.
If the paint on your paint brush handles is peeling, it's probably because you're overfilling your water containers and letting the brushes sit in the water for too long.
You would assume that the paint would protect the wood from the moisture but water has a way of seeping into the wood handles. The moisture makes the wood expand. The repeating cycles of the expansion of contraction causes the paint to crack.
One thing I forgot to mention in the video is you can just buy paint brushes with plastic handles if you want to leave your brushes soaking in water as you paint. The plastic handles aren't affected by the water.
Obviously letting paint dry in the bristles will ruin or damage your brushes but, as I show in the video, you can bring them back to life.
The other point is that you might think that you're cleaning your brushes, but the chances are that you there's still some paint left in the bristles. It helps to use a good brush soap, and to work the soap into the bristles with your hand.
I use the Dawn dish soap for regular cleaning and then use the Master's Brush Cleaner to give them a good cleaning once in awhile.
Rough surfaces can wear down your brushes faster. Painting on brick or cinder block walls is especially rough on brushes. Using pumice mediums or even the clear gesso will wear your brushes down quicker than working on paper or canvas.

These are two quotes about the affect of acrylic paints on bristles:
"Acrylic dispersion paints also contain ingredients that strip natural hair of its natural oils, causing the hair to become brittle."
"Synthetic hair brushes have greater chemical resistance and are therefore more suitable for acrylic dispersion paints, which have an alkaline pH due to the ammonia pH buffer."

Here's a compilation of some of my favorite art instruction books. I've learned a lot about painting through people that I have never even met in real life. I waited a year to post this video and this easel has held up well. I like how it can tilt totally flat. That makes it easier to gesso canvases or to use painting techniques that require the canvas to lay entirely flat. At the time I filmed this video, I had purchased this easel with my own money. Since I made this purchase, Meeden has sent me other art supplies to review so that's why I marked...

That cool looking
just what i was thinking about!
You are on a roll with some great videos!
Thank you
Thank you!
and there is some video of you showing how you mix the retarder ? you mixed into the primary colors or you add after?
I haven't made that video....yet! You can do either but for me It makes sense to mix it into the colors when you first squeeze them out onto the palette. When using retarder you have to be careful not to put too much in because the paint can dry tacky, I think they recommend 30% or less. If that sounds like a pain there are slow drying mediums that you can add in any amount. For example, Liquitex has "Slow-dri" acrylic gel and fluid mediums.
the tisue that you are cleaning your brush are wet? or dry? im starting at this painting life , and im SO LOST hahahhahaha. i cant afford a class right now, so im experimenting and trying by myself first.
When I clean off the brush that has soft bristles, I use a dry rag to wipe off the excess paint. When the bristles get wet the tend to clump together and I'm trying to avoid that.
'who ate my canvas' in real life
Is dioxazine purple a bluish purple or a purplish blue?
Good question! I tend to think of it as purple. There's probably a bias to it but it's a decent purple to start with.
thanks for sharing Royal Talens also sell Cobra 100 medium for simialr effect
Thanks! I saw that but I haven't tried it out yet...it doesn't seem like it's widely available yet.
hello sir is that medium requires another medium or not?
@@kennethaquino8352 I'm not sure what you're asking....I think the medium mix 100 from cobra works the same way as the one I used from Schmincke in the video.
i mean is if you use Medium W mediumis do you need to used another medium like linseed oil or safflower oil to increase the flow sorry English is not my primary language
Once you add the Medium W, it works just water mixable oils. So for the first layer I would add water to increase the flow ans so that it dries faster. I only add oil or painting medium when I add additional layers, to follow the fat over lean principle. You would want to use water mixable linseed oil instead of regular linseed oil.
You are complicate
Can it cut vinyl
I assume you mean vinyl film... I haven't tried cutting vinyl with it .I Googled it and there are people who cut vinyl film with paper trimmers and even scissors...so I think it would work but you'd have to test it.
Wow! This is similar to what I like to do!
The game irl!
love the video!
Your work is amazing. These courses are not taught in any art college.
Thank you so much for this video. I'm starting my first painting next month, will be based on something red so I will definitely come back to this video!
Always fun to see color mixing!
I learned a lot about red and blue if you want a great purple you mix magenta and blue it makes more of a purple than red but red still can make purple though if you mix it with blue it just depends on what type of red if the red has more magenta in it like cool red it would make purple but if it has more yellow in it like an orangey warm red it would make more of a brownish or gray purple than pure red and blue naturally makes a dark purple not that bad sometimes a bit more purple but not as vibrant but still kind of a purple magenta and blue marks bright purple so yeah it all just depends
Hello my friend if it's ok if you can paint a picture of power rangers the reason y is because they are different colors if that's ok
How about a slice of pizza? 😅
You got the eye!
Good God.. this is amazing! So lucky I came across your video. Thanks for sharing this with us.
great tips thanks
if it werent for the black then it would look invisible, thats sick man
Great info; thanks!
U sound tired
I feel like it’s just SLIGHTLY darker
I need to practice my color mixing. I love watching these!
Perfect! I learn a lot from your videos. Thank You!
Red isn't a primary color in subtractive colors, only with additive colors like RGB on a LCD screen.
This is good info for artists who may not realize the options available for presenting their art!
Thank you so much. How do you chose the right floater frame with the risers?
If you're asking about the risers then I assume that you're framing a flat panel so look for the floaterframe that says it fits flat and cradled panels up to 7/8" deep (which is what I used in this video). The deeper floater frames are for thicker canvases and panels. There's the thin edge and thick edge, I like the thin but that's just my preference! 🙂 The Ampersand website lists all of the different styles and colors.
@@ChrisBreier thank you so much for taking the time to reply to my comment!! If I wanted to buy my own ‘risers’ what are they called exactly? Google isn’t bringing up the results I want .
@@Erinba Oh, I see! I think something like a square wooden dowel might work. The ones that come with the frame are 15mm on one side and 19mm on the other.
I believe olive green definitely has warmth in it whereas army green has more black and grunginess to it.
I read it as 2 least toxic ways to "steal" gouache paint Bro something is wrong with me
Thank you! You are genius 😊
OMG i didn't know how badly i actually needed this info Thanks for such and awesome video on this topic :)
Hello I'm sorry about yesterday when I told you about purple and colors understanding you right about most of it but colors are advance and complicated it's so much to learn cmy and ryb is color wheels that works differently everybody debates but I myself accepts but another secret you haven't find out about is that you can make yellow what I've learned is if you mix 2 colors that contains that same color it neutralize each other to reveal that color within them sometimes can you make a fluorescent color wheel using neon pink as red neon blue and neon yellow I'm just curious to see the results of the fluorescent secondary colors you can make from that if it's ok
No worries....no need to apologize! The thing to keep in mind about demos where they mix blue or yellow from other colors is the results are much less vivid and pure than the yellow that you would get in a tube.
I just sealed a gouache painting with with the Dorland wax medium and had zero issues. I used the spectrafix on an oil pastel painting. I think I did singing wrong because the spray come out uneven. It did sealed the painting tho.
Dorland's is quick and easy! As for using Spectrafix on oil pastels, did you use their final fix or the Degas fixative? I checked their site and it says the beeswax in the final fix doesn't work very well with oil pastels. They recommended the Degas fixative instead. I haven't tried it on oil pastels so I can't verify how well it works.
@@ChrisBreier It was the Degas. I only used it once. It was a sketch study, so I wasn't too upset about it. It didn't smear the work, but I can see where the individual droplets dried when I hold it up to the light. I picked up some cray-pas oil pastel varnish in Japan. I'll try that one or next time I play around with the medium.
Thanks for the recommendations! Would you also recommend these for acrylic painting?
You're welcome! And yes, there's always something to be learned by reading about (or watching videos of) artists working in various mediums...even if you don't work in the same medium. Books about oils, watercolor, gouache, etc include useful information about working with color schemes, composition, and simplifying subjects. Plus browsing through these books are a source of inspiration.🖌
@@ChrisBreier perfect…thank you again!! Appreciate all your videos and tutorials…super helpful and your art is inspirational!
How long after painting with gouache does it take to be fully dry and less likely to smear?
The paint itself dries rather quickly. Relatively thin layers are touch dry in minutes and it seems fully dry in about 30 minutes. I only had an issue with smearing when I brushed on the natural glass too soon after spraying the painting with spectrafix.. So I would wait a day to let the spectrafix cure before applying the natural glass.
You is miss understood different shades of color make different types red and blue does make purple it just depends on what shade primary colors can be made you can also make yellow with lime green and a bright amber orange
You might be interested in a video I recently posted where I tried mixing purple from 6 different types of red. Magenta produces a vibrant purple that's similar to Dioxazine. All of the 6 reds produced a duller purple like the one in this video. Here's the link ua-cam.com/video/IsoKgnh9jUY/v-deo.htmlsi=J-SOnJXC7xzRALun
@@ChrisBreier i understand there is no such thing as a perfect primary color so any color can be !ade you just use as to what is considered to be primary to make other colors I seen videos of different people mixing reds with blues and it makes good purples is a thing called color bias warm redds gives you dull brownish purples but if the red doesn't have yellow in it which is a warm bias it would make more purple than brown and dark muddy colors it's the same with green you should try to make a mixing green video if the yellow have red bias it would make dull olive green but if the yellow is cool or without red it makes better pure greens
When i mount my panels in floater frames i also paint the spacers (blocks) with black acrylic. Great demo though!
Great video Chris! I’d love to try that spray varnish. Sometimes it gets a little loathsome to be constantly dealing with these toxic chemicals all The time! Appreciate the great demo here! 👍
Thanks Danny! The spectrafix spray works well for sealing drawings too so it's rather useful. I try to use the least toxic materials when possible especially since I live in a cold climate where I can't open the windows for half the year. I've also been working with water mixable oils which has gotten me back into oil painting again.
@@ChrisBreier that’s awesome! I’ve been dabbling with water mixables as well but hadn’t found a good non toxic varnish option so this is useful.
I guess you can't use Spectrafix as a topcoat for oils or acrylics....you can use it underneath to seal a drawing before you paint over it. So far I've been using Gamvar for varnishing oils which isn't too bad to work with. It contains Gamsol which if I remember correctly is also naphtha. If I find something better I will probably make a video about it. 🙂
I'm finally thinking of getting a high grade watercolour set like this after 2 and a bit years of using a cheap Prang watercolour set! This is probably the only good (imo) video review of this, the others talk too much of other things.. are you able to switch out the pans? Thanks for the video :)
Thanks Amanda! Yes, you can replace the pans when you use up the paint or if you just want to replace one of the colors. These should work better than the Prang set. Cotman are the Winsor and Newton line of student grade watercolors. At some point you should try out a pan of professional watercolor to see if you like it.
Fake it made gold for me 😡
